Oxford-Based Chip-Level Workshop

Hardware Repair
Done at the Component Level

We don't swap motherboards when a single IC has failed. At LaptopChipLevel, our technicians work directly with the circuit — diagnosing faults, replacing individual components, and rebuilding functionality where others would write a device off.

What We Do

Repair Services

Every job starts with a proper assessment. We don't guess — we measure, probe, and test until we understand exactly what has failed.

Chip-Level Motherboard Repair

We work directly with individual ICs — power management chips, bridge chips, embedded controllers — rather than defaulting to a full board replacement. Suitable for complex faults where component sourcing makes sense.

Enquire

Overheating Diagnostics

Thermal issues rarely fix themselves. We inspect heatsink condition, fan operation, thermal interface material, and the power delivery section to find the actual source rather than applying a temporary workaround.

Power Circuit Repair

No-power faults — whether from a dead charging circuit, blown protection component, or shorted rail — require careful voltage-tracing and load testing. We carry a broad range of common power ICs.

Enquire

Screen & Keyboard Replacement

Physical replacements done properly — with attention to cable routing, connector alignment, and correct part matching. We don't just fit what's cheapest; we fit what's correct for your model.

Enquire

Data Access Troubleshooting

If a device won't boot and accessing data is a priority, we can assess the storage separately from the main fault. We make clear distinctions between what is recoverable and what isn't before any work begins.

Enquire

Battery & Charging Issues

Charging problems often originate on the motherboard rather than in the battery itself. We test both the charging IC and the battery cells to ensure we're addressing the root cause, not just the symptom.

How It Works

Our Repair Process

We follow a structured approach that gives you visibility at each stage. Nothing is done without your understanding of what was found and what we propose to do about it.

Start a Repair
01

Device Intake & Initial Check

We document the device condition on arrival, note any visible damage, and confirm what symptoms you are experiencing. No disassembly at this stage.

02

Systematic Diagnostics

We use oscilloscopes, multimeters, thermal imaging, and known-good reference boards to identify the faulty stage within the circuit.

03

Fault Report & Your Approval

We explain what was found in plain terms and outline the repair options available, including their relative likelihood of success and cost. You decide how to proceed.

04

Component-Level Repair Work

Replacement of the identified faulty component using appropriate soldering equipment — hot air stations, BGA reballing tools, or fine-tip iron depending on the job.

05

Post-Repair Testing

The device is tested under load, thermal performance is verified, and functionality is confirmed before the device is returned to you.

Self-Assessment

What Might Be Wrong?

Answer a few questions about your device's symptoms and we'll suggest the most likely diagnostic path.

Repair Complexity Estimator

Not all repairs are the same. Select your device type and the issue category to get a rough sense of the diagnostic complexity involved. This is informational — not a price quote.

A firm quote requires us to physically inspect the device.

Quick Checks

Hardware Health Indicators

These aren't diagnostics — they're simple checklists to help you understand whether a professional assessment makes sense.

Tick the symptoms that apply to your device:

Fan runs constantly, even during light use
Bottom panel or keyboard area is uncomfortably warm
Performance slows noticeably after 10–15 minutes of use
System shuts off unexpectedly during demanding tasks
Fan noise is louder than it used to be
Thermal throttling warnings appear in system utilities

Result: Tick items that apply to get an indication.

Tick the symptoms that apply to your battery:

Battery percentage drops quickly during normal use
Device only works reliably when plugged in
Charging stops before reaching 100%
Battery appears swollen or lid doesn't sit flat
Charging indicator is inconsistent or flickers
Battery was last replaced more than three years ago

Result: Tick items that apply to get an indication.

These indicators lean towards a hardware fault rather than a software issue:

Problem persists after a clean operating system reinstall
Error appears at boot before the OS loads
A specific hardware component fails in built-in diagnostics
Physical damage or liquid contact has occurred
Issue occurs consistently regardless of OS or boot drive
Other devices show the same problem when connected to this hardware

Result: Tick items that apply to get an indication.

Customer Feedback

What Clients Say

"My MacBook Pro had been written off by two other shops. LaptopChipLevel diagnosed a faulty backlight driver IC and repaired it within a few days. Everything explained clearly, no surprises on the bill."

Daniel Hartley
Oxford

"Brought in a Dell that had liquid damage. They walked me through what was affected, which components were salvageable, and what the realistic outcome was before touching anything. Appreciated the honesty."

Fiona Marchetti
Abingdon

"HP laptop was shutting down randomly. Turned out to be a dry joint on the power management IC — not something most places would even look for. Running perfectly now. Good value for a complex job."

Tom Adeyemi
Headington, Oxford

"My gaming laptop overheated constantly. After a full thermal service and a replaced fan, the temperatures dropped by 25°C under load. Night and day difference. Wish I'd come here sooner."

Kieran Walsh
Cowley, Oxford

"Dropped my ThinkPad. Screen cracked and it wouldn't boot afterwards. The team repaired a bent connector on the motherboard as well as replacing the screen. Turnaround was reasonable and the communication was good."

Annette Cho
Witney

"I was worried the data on my failed SSD was gone. They were upfront that recovery wasn't guaranteed but managed to access it through a different method. Professional and realistic throughout."

Stefan Novak
Bicester

"Brought in an older Asus laptop I use for work. They replaced the charging IC rather than insisting on a new motherboard. Cost a fraction of what others quoted. Works fine."

Rachel Thornton
Oxford City Centre

"Very specific knowledge of Apple hardware. They found a capacitor issue on my MacBook Air board that was causing intermittent shutdowns. Repair was neat, the board looks clean. No issues since."

Ibrahim Al-Rashid
Summertown, Oxford

"Used them twice — once for a no-power HP, once for an overheating Lenovo. Both times the fault was found and explained properly. I knew what I was paying for before work started."
